Swim Through the Sky This Summer

An article I wrote for Long Island Trends Magazine.

Looking to have the time of your life? Make this summer soar above the rest and plunge into the sky at Skydive Long Island, located in the beautiful town of Calverton.

Take things to the extreme and swoop into the blue from 13,500 feet up to experience the world above the clouds. Enjoy breathtaking views of Long Island’s wonderful scenery, including the famous twin forks, the Hamptons, and the Atlantic Ocean. On a clear day, you can even spot the New York City skyline, about 70 miles away.

Me, on top of the world, June 2010.

To jump, you must be at least 18 years of age and no more than 225 pounds. No experience is necessary. You’ll be attached to a fully certified, topnotch skydiver, with thousands of jumps beneath his/her belt. Leave it to your instructor to pull the two parachutes and enjoy the energizing ride.

When the plane door opens and it’s your turn to dive, you’ll leap into the world and begin free-falling against the wind at quickening speeds.  The rush of cool air and the bright, blue sky surrounding you at all angles will get your adrenaline pumping, but before you know it, you’ll feel the pull of the large parachute and you’ll be floating upright in a sitting position above the beaches, farms, and towns of Long Island. Depending on the weather, your instructor may even give you the chance to steer the parachute. At an extra cost, you can have a videographer jump along with you to capture digital stills and a freefall video so you can document your adventure and relive your flight whenever you’d like.

Before taking the plunge, make sure you’re wearing athletic type or loose fitting clothing that’s appropriate for the weather, and have your sneakers tightly tied around your feet. Bring enthusiasm and a daring appetite and you’ll be set to soar. Secure, comfortable goggles and harnesses will be provided by your instructor.

Have the guts to jump solo? The instructors at Skydive Long Island can take you from your first thrilling tandem dive and train you to become an experienced professional. In as few as 10 jumps, you’ll be diving out of planes thousands of feet in the air and pulling and steering parachutes on your own. In no time, you’ll be on your way to receiving your A-class license through the USPA (United States Parachute Association). Skydive Long Island is Long Island’s only full-service skydiving and training facility serving the New York area.

With a 10,000-foot-long runway and a 5-acre landing area, Skydive Long Island’s airport is huge, and it’s the home of the largest landing area in the United States. Skydive Long Island only uses the most up to date and safest equipment, as well as the most progressive training methods available. Skydive Long Island has two turbine engine aircraft, a 19 passenger Cessna Grand Caravan and 14 Passenger King Air B90.

If you’re looking for an action packed experience to fill your summer, be sure to visit Skydive Long Island to take on the skies. Skydive Long Island has been a Group Member of the USPA, the governing body of skydiving in the United States since 1986, and prides safety as its number one priority. Swing by and see why Skydive Long Island is the only place to skydive on the Island.
